Nick Reynolds recently did me a favour. But don’t let that cloud your view of this piece.

I wanted to review The Nick Reynolds Show because it is exactly the sort of thing one wants to find on the web. It is wholehearted, it has spirit and it performs a function. It is not unique, but then what is? As someone in a bar once said, there is no original thought, take this review as evidence if you like. I review it because it deserves to be heard. It takes its subject matter more seriously than it does its image, although it has a fitting logo – which only after I wrote it did I discover was a pun. Or was it after speaking to someone in a bar.

The show comes out every Thursday. It is up to number 34, with one or two weeks missed. That is 34 weeks of dedication.

Show 34 featured Cake as the opener. A nice mellow groove, which has a touch of the Talking Heads about it in the lyrics and their delivery. I’ve never heard of Cake but I’d like to hear more. And in that sense The Nick Reynolds Show has done what it sets out to do.

The next track was Black Moth Super Rainbow. A truck jazz Air sort of sound. The best thing about it was that I still thought it might be them when I started hearing the next song on Nick’s playlist. Something a bit different and unexpected is always welcome.

I then heard Burial by Ghost Hardware. I love the names of the bands on this site. And the music is top quality and wide-ranging indie. By Ghost time on the Nick Reynolds Show I was vowing to give it a more regular listen. It is clear Nick has a mission for us to hear stuff out there that we are not hearing. The big sites, shows and labels already give us what we want, so it is nice to be given what we might like for a change.

And just as I had finished writing the above, track 4 comes. More grasshopper groove from Cake. Which confirmed why I want to recommend this site. It is for music fans.

I recommend Nick as a manager if you are an unsigned band; after all someone who plays out the show with The Undertones is going to look after you.

The Nick Reynolds Show. Any show that hits you with the music first and talks later isn’t lying when it says, “It’s about the Music.”
